History & Significance

A routine Border truce day at Redeswire — one of the formal meetings where outstanding cross-border complaints were settled — turned into a bloody brawl. Fighting broke out between English and Scottish factions; the Scottish side was reinforced by Jedburgh townsmen and routed the English. The English warden Sir John Forster was captured. The incident threatened to cause a war between England and Scotland but was eventually patched up diplomatically.
