The Battle

History & Significance

The Novantae of Galloway were the southwesternmost Scottish tribe and were brought under Roman control during Agricola fourth season. From the Galloway coast Agricola could see Ireland on clear days, and Tacitus records he discussed the conquest of Ireland with an exiled Irish king who had come to him. The Novantae submission opened the whole of southern Scotland to Roman administration.
