The Battle

History & Significance

When the Great Heathen Army landed in East Anglia in 865, King Edmund was compelled to supply the Danes with horses under threat of immediate devastation. This enforced provisioning transformed the Viking force from a foot and sea army into a mobile cavalry force capable of striking rapidly across England. The submission at Thetford was made without battle, as East Anglia lacked military power to resist.
