The Battle

History & Significance

After the fall of Benfleet, the remnant Danish force under Haesten retreated to Shoebury at the tip of the Mersea peninsula and built a new fort. They were then reinforced by large numbers from East Anglia and Northumbria. This reconstituted army then struck west up the Thames valley, threatening deep into Mercia. The Chronicle records it was one of the largest forces seen in the campaign.
