History & Significance

The Mackenzie clan's expansion westward from Dingwall into Wester Ross brought them into conflict with the MacLeods of Lewis and the MacDonalds of Glengarry in 1602. Mackenzie military operations through Gairloch and Loch Broom drove out or subordinated the smaller clans of the western seaboard. The Crown supported Mackenzie expansion as part of its policy of using reliable Protestant clans to extend government authority into areas formerly dominated by Catholic or independent Gaelic chiefs. The 1602 operations were the military foundation of Mackenzie dominance of the northwest Highlands.
