Richborough (Rutupiae) was transformed from the original Claudian landing monument into a massive Saxon Shore fort in the late 3rd century, with walls 3 metres thick and projecting artillery bastions. As the primary port of entry into Britain, it was both a strategic target and a defensive bulwark. During the Carausian period it served as the main base for the Britannic Empire fleet. After reconquest by Constantius, it was regarrisoned as part of the restored Saxon Shore system.
