History & Significance

Aethelflaed systematically fortified a chain of burhs across Mercia to contain the Danelaw. Warwick was established as a fortified borough around 914, controlling the Avon crossing and blocking Danish access from the east. The creation of each burh was accompanied by the suppression of Danish raiding parties operating in the region, though the Chronicle records no major pitched battle here. Warwick became a key base for subsequent operations against Derby and Leicester.
