Norfolk faced the North Sea and had a long coastline of beaches suitable for amphibious landings by an army approaching from the Spanish Netherlands. The 1588 muster brought the Norfolk trained bands and county militia to coastal defensive positions. The absence of any attack allowed the Norfolk forces to stand down, but the muster was an important demonstration of the nationwide reach of the Armada emergency mobilisation.
