During the First Barons War, the French Prince Louis invaded England in support of the rebel barons and campaigned through East Anglia in 1216. Colchester, with its ancient Roman walls, was a significant fortified point. The castle fell to Louis\'s forces. This was part of the broader baronial war that saw much of eastern England under French and rebel control until the Battle of Lincoln and Battle of Sandwich in 1217 turned the tide for the young Henry III\'s regency government.
