Colchester Castle is a Norman castle built in Essex in the eleventh century, occupying the site of the Roman Temple of Claudius which was destroyed during Boudica's revolt in 60 or 61 AD. The castle's massive keep, constructed from approximately 1076 onwards under the direction of Eudo Dapifer, reused substantial quantities of Roman brick and stone from the temple's ruins, making it one of the largest keeps in England by area. The temple itself, dedicated to the deified Emperor Claudius, was a monumental Corinthian structure of the mid-first century AD and served as a focal point for the Roman colonia established at Camulodunum. The survival of the castle keep, with its Roman masonry substantially preserved within its fabric, provides important archaeological evidence for understanding both Roman Colchester and the Norman conquest of England.
