The 1539 Sussex coastal muster was ordered simultaneously with those in Kent and Hampshire as Henry VIII prepared for an expected Franco-Imperial invasion following the Treaty of Toledo. Sussex was particularly vulnerable as it had suffered repeat French raids throughout the Hundred Years War and its beaches were accessible to an invasion fleet.
