The Battle

History & Significance

In 920, Edward built a burh at Bakewell in Derbyshire and received submissions from the kings of the north. The Chronicle records that Ragnald of York, Constantine of Scotland, Owain of Strathclyde, and Ealdred of Bamburgh all chose Edward as father and lord. This was the high-water mark of Edward's overlordship, effectively making him ruler over all of Britain. Ragnald maintained considerable independence in practice.

Forces Involved

Edward's forces c.2,000–3,000; northern submission unopposed.
