The Battle

History & Significance

Assandun (probably Ashingdon in Essex) was the decisive battle of the Danish conquest of England. Cnut and Edmund Ironside had fought five campaigns in 1016; at Assandun, the English army broke when Eadric Streona — Edmund\'s treacherous brother-in-law — fled with his forces at a critical moment. Edmund survived and a peace was arranged dividing England, but Edmund died within weeks (possibly murdered) leaving Cnut king of all England. The battle ended the last serious English resistance to Danish rule.
