Sandham Castle on the Isle of Wight was one of the chain of blockhouses built in 1544 to defend the island from the expected French invasion. Its position at Sandown Bay covered the most likely landing beach on the island and was intended to prevent a repetition of earlier French raids that had scoured the island. The 1545 French fleet actually appeared off the island and landed troops nearby.
