The Battle

History & Significance

The Chronicle records a great battle at Woden's barrow area in which Ceawlin was driven out. Ceawlin — who had been the dominant ruler in Britain for two decades — was deposed by rivals within Wessex and died the following year. His fall shows that even the most powerful early English kings depended on continuous military success; failure meant immediate dynastic eclipse.
