History & Significance

Burton-on-Trent's bridges over the Trent were strategically important as one of the few reliable crossings in the Midlands. Control of the town and its bridges changed hands multiple times during the Civil War as Royalist and Parliamentary forces competed for the vital river crossing. The town's role as a crossing point on the main route between the north Midlands and the south made it militarily significant throughout the conflict.
