The Battle

History & Significance

After the catastrophe at Ringmere, Ulfcytel continued to organise resistance in East Anglia through 1010, mustering forces to protect towns and monasteries from the rampaging Danish army. The Danes spent three months burning and slaying across East Anglia, Oxfordshire, and Cambridgeshire. Ulfcytel harassed Danish foraging parties and protected some communities. His persistent resistance earned him lasting respect; he was killed fighting at Assandun in 1016.
