History & Significance

Bigbury hillfort near Canterbury shows evidence of Roman assault — Caesar had also attacked it during his 54 BC expedition. Caratacus's forces withdrew after the Claudian attack, falling back to the Medway. The fort guarded the crossing of the Great Stour river and was a key defensive position on the approach to the Medway.
