Edmund ravaged the kingdom of Strathclyde (the northern British kingdom) in 945 and then ceded it to Malcolm I of Scotland on condition of military alliance by sea and land. This remarkable piece of strategic diplomacy gave Scotland overlordship of Cumbria in exchange for Malcolm support against Norse enemies. It established the rough boundary between England and Scotland in the north-west and was a significant act of political geography.
