History & Significance

The first of three sieges of Pontefract Castle. One of the strongest medieval fortresses in England, it resisted for over a year. After its surrender, Royalists recaptured it in a daring night escalade almost immediately, leading to a second siege. Pontefract became the most persistently contested fortress in Yorkshire, enduring three separate sieges over five years.
