The Battle

History & Significance

In October 1644 Montrose occupied Fyvie Castle in Aberdeenshire with his depleted Highland and Irish force. A Covenanting army under Argyll besieged the castle but Montrose held out through several days of fighting, his musketeers defending the castle grounds against Covenanting assault. He eventually broke out northward under cover of darkness, evading encirclement.
