The Battle

History & Significance

After taking York, Olaf Guthfrithson launched a devastating raid into the English Midlands, sacking Tamworth — the old Mercian capital and a site of great symbolic importance — and penetrating as far south as the Watling Street zone. Edmund besieged Olaf at Leicester but the archbishops Oda and Wulfstan brokered the Treaty of Leicester, which ceded the Five Boroughs to Olaf. The sack of Tamworth undid Aethelflaed achievement.
