History & Significance

The Bonnie Earl of Moray was murdered at Donibristle by the Earl of Huntly, apparently with royal encouragement, in one of the most notorious crimes of the Jacobean era. Moray was young, handsome, and Protestant — his murder outraged Scotland. A famous ballad lamented him. Huntly was briefly imprisoned but released. The killing deepened the Gordon-Forbes-Moray alliance against Gordon power in the northeast.
