History & Significance

Following the Kempsford clash, the Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire borderland remained contested between Wessex and a weakened Mercia in the early ninth century. Egbert of Wessex, who had returned from exile in Francia, began asserting West Saxon claims along the upper Thames. The Burford area was a traditional frontier between the two kingdoms.
