History & Significance

The first major military crisis of Mary Queen of Scots' personal reign. The Earl of Huntly, most powerful magnate in northern Scotland, launched what amounted to a rebellion. He was defeated and died on the field — reportedly of apoplexy. His body was later tried for treason (post-mortem). The battle broke Gordon power in the north.
