History & Significance

As Parliament tightened its blockade of Oxford in 1645-46, outlying Royalist garrisons throughout Oxfordshire were systematically reduced. Bampton was one of several minor Royalist strongpoints around Oxford that had to be cleared before the Royalist capital could be effectively blockaded.
