History & Significance

The Battle of Merton in April 871 was one of the most costly engagements of the year-long campaign. King Aethelred died of wounds shortly after, making it effectively his last engagement. Alfred described it as a fierce and prolonged contest in which the Danes initially fled before rallying and driving the English back. The death of Aethelred I left Alfred king at a desperate moment.
