History & Significance

Ammianus Marcellinus records that in 360 AD the Scots and Picts "broke the peace" and were ravaging areas near the frontier. Julian sent his general Lupicinus with four infantry units to Britain. Lupicinus restored order but was recalled when Julian declared himself Augustus and civil war threatened. The episode shows the increasing pressure on the northern frontier in the late Roman period.

Forces Involved

Romans (Lupicinus): c. 2,000–4,000. Picts/Scots: c. 3,000–5,000.
