The Battle

History & Significance

After Royalist forces under Colonel Bamfield seized Arundel Castle in December 1643, the Parliamentary general Sir William Waller conducted a rapid approach march from London through the Surrey Weald to besiege it in January 1644. Waller moved his army through difficult winter terrain with remarkable speed, reaching Arundel and beginning bombardment before any Royalist relief could be organised.
