History & Significance

During the same campaign in which the Danes defeated the Picts at Dollar and killed King Constantine I, Viking forces also swept through coastal Lothian. The monastic communities around Tyninghame and the Forth coast were particularly vulnerable. Fragments of saints relics and church treasures were moved inland to escape the raiders — a pattern repeated across the British Isles in this decade.
