The Battle

History & Significance

The first Doncaster confrontation in October 1536 exposed the Crown's military weakness in the north. The Duke of Norfolk could field perhaps 8,000 men against a rebel host of 30,000 or more. Norfolk had to negotiate and effectively grant a pardon. This was arguably the moment Henry VIII came closest to losing control of the north.
