History & Significance

Penda killed Oswald and had him dismembered at Maserfield; his head, hands and arms were hung on stakes. The site became a major pilgrimage centre as Oswald was venerated across Britain, Ireland, and Germany. The exact site is disputed between Oswestry in Shropshire and other locations, but Oswestry (Os-wald-tre, Oswald tree) preserves his name.
