Chirk Castle, the Marcher fortress guarding the Ceiriog valley, held a Royalist garrison. Mytton's Parliamentary forces besieged it in early 1646. Unlike most Civil War castles it was not slighted after the war; it remains one of the best-preserved castle fortresses in Wales.
