History & Significance

After decades of legal pressure, the Campbells finally drove out the remaining MacDonald population of Kintyre following James VI reign. The Earl of Argyll received a royal commission to plant Kintyre with Lowland settlers, displacing the Gaelic-speaking MacDonald tenants. This was one of the earliest plantation exercises carried out in mainland Scotland.
