History & Significance

The MacDonalds of Dunnyveg (Islay) were by the late sixteenth century the last significant remnant of the old Lordship of the Isles. Government attempts to bring them under legal authority were repeatedly resisted. This skirmish at the south coast of Islay near Dunyvaig Castle illustrates the near-total independence the clan maintained even at this late date.
