The Battle

History & Significance

Exeter remained loyal to the royalist cause during the First Barons War. While the south and east fell to Louis and the barons, the southwest was slower to submit. Exeter's garrison held against baronial pressure. The city later provided a base for royalist reconsolidation in the southwest after the turning points of 1217.
