The Battle

History & Significance

The Charlton family, the dominant English reiver clan of North Tynedale, conducted systematic raids into Scotland and against other English families in 1519. Based around Hesleyside and Bellingham, the Charltons were one of the four great English reiver surnames along with the Milburns, Robsons, and Dodds. The 1519 raids formed part of a cycle of inter-clan and cross-border violence that the English Middle March warden was powerless to suppress without sustained crown investment.
