History & Significance

Haakon IV assembled his fleet at Orkney before the campaign that ended at Largs. The Norwegian gathering involved skirmishes with local Scottish ships attempting to monitor the fleet. Orkney was at this time Norwegian territory, providing a natural base for Norse operations against the Scottish western isles. The assembly at Orkney was the last great Viking naval muster.
