History & Significance

During the initial raids of September 1400, Glyndŵr's forces struck English border settlements including those in the Oswestry area. Oswestry itself (Old Welsh: Croesoswallt) was a border town with a mixed Welsh and English population. The raids demonstrated from the very outset that Glyndŵr's rebellion was not merely a local Denbighshire affair but threatened the entire Anglo-Welsh border.
