The Battle

History & Significance

Newark had resisted Parliamentary sieges throughout the war — one of the strongest and most important Royalist garrisons in England. It only surrendered when Charles I, a prisoner of the Scots at Newcastle, personally ordered the garrison to yield. The order caused consternation among the defenders who considered themselves unbeaten.
