In the days immediately before the Battle of Sheriffmuir on 13 November 1715, both armies manoeuvred through the approaches to Dunblane. Argyll's cavalry patrols and Mar's advance horse clashed on the roads north of Stirling. The town of Dunblane sat in the valley between Stirling and Sheriffmuir and was contested ground as both armies probed for the battle. Advance cavalry skirmished on the roads north of the town on 12 November as the armies moved to their positions on Sheriffmuir. Government cavalry sought to identify Mar's order of march while Jacobite horsemen screened their movements.
