History & Significance

Caedwalla, who was himself a West Saxon exile, conquered Kent twice in 686-687 and killed its king Mul, who was the brother of his ally Hlothhere. When the Kentish men burned Mul in revenge Caedwalla devastated Kent again. These brutal campaigns temporarily brought Kent under West Saxon control before Caedwalla abdicated and went to Rome.
