History & Significance

The spark of Kett's Rebellion was an enclosure riot at Wymondham during Wymondham fair. Initially directed against Robert Kett's own enclosures, the rebels turned to him to lead them when he unexpectedly sided with the rioters and agreed to lead the protest. This origin in a popular festival and the paradox of a gentleman leading an anti-enclosure protest gave the rebellion its unusual character.
