History & Significance

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that in 851 the Danes first overwintered in England, on the Isle of Thanet. This escalation from seasonal raiding to year-round presence dramatically changed the strategic situation. Rather than fleeing before winter, the Vikings could now use English territory as a base for sustained campaigning — a model the Great Heathen Army would perfect in 865.
