History & Significance

The raid on Sheppey in 835 AD is one of the earliest recorded major Viking raids on southeast England. This raid, occurring thirteen years after the first recorded raid on southern England, marked the beginning of sustained Viking pressure on the Thames estuary and the Kent coast.
