The raid on Sheppey in 835 AD is one of the earliest recorded major Viking raids on southeast England. The island's monastic community at Minster-in-Sheppey, founded in the 7th century by Queen Sexburh, was devastated. This raid, occurring thirteen years after the first recorded raid on southern England, marked the beginning of sustained Viking pressure on the Thames estuary and the Kent coast.
Viking raiders: c. 500-2,000 (5-20 ships). Kent settlements: c. 200-500 defenders.
