History & Significance

Before the Battle of Aberdeen in September 1644, Montrose had to force the Bridge of Dee against a Covenanting rearguard. This preliminary skirmish secured the main approach to Aberdeen from the south. The main battle followed within days. Montrose had crossed this same bridge in 1639 but this time for the opposite side.
