History & Significance

Hywel ab Edwin returned from Ireland with a Norse fleet and landed at the mouth of the Towy. Gruffudd ap Llywelyn met and destroyed him in a combined land-naval engagement. Hywel was killed. This victory secured Deheubarth for Gruffudd and marked a crucial step toward his unification of all Wales. He was the only Welsh ruler ever to control the whole of Wales — a remarkable achievement given the fragmentation of the previous century.
