History & Significance

After taking York the Great Heathen Army moved south to Nottingham. Burgred of Mercia and his West Saxon allies could not storm the Danish fortification. Mercia made peace and paid tribute. This established the Danish pattern of fortifying towns that would make their army nearly impossible to dislodge without pitched battle.
