Barlings Abbey in Lincolnshire, the house of Matthew Mackarel Abbot of Barlings, became a significant base for the Lincolnshire rising of 1536. Mackarel actively encouraged the rebel muster and the abbey grounds served as an assembly point. After the rising collapsed, the abbey was dissolved and Mackarel was executed.
