History & Significance

Fairfax stormed Bridgwater on 23 July 1645, firing mortar bombs into the defended town and crossing the River Parrett in a night assault that caught the Royalist garrison off balance; the capture of Bridgwater gave Parliament the principal Royalist base in Somerset with large stores of ammunition and provisions.
